MY CHILD IS OVER 12
If a parent is seeking a teacher for a child over the age of 12, that student falls into one of two categories:
Beginner: The student has never studied music before, or is seeking a teacher to begin study on a new instrument. Any one over age 12 is considered an adult beginner when it comes to music, and as such learns very differently from traditional child beginners. To address this situation, there are many piano method books which are designed for beginners beyond age 12, and even some special materials for even more mature adults (who still have other learning issues that require special attention). For other instruments, the materials are not so specified and in fact are the same for all age groups (except for some materials for the very young and preschooler). Read those topic pages to the left that apply to your situation to get a better understanding of what it means to study music as an adult.
Transfer: If the student has studied before or currently has a teacher, then that student is a transfer student. If that student is over age 12, there are often additional issues to consider in the transfer: 1) Is the student serious about music study? 2) Is the student planning to attend a special music high school? 3) Is the student intending to audition for college level study in music? 4) What are your reasons for switching teachers? Read those topics to the left that apply to your situation, in addition to the TRANSFER STUDENT pages).
