KMI has voice students ranging in ages from 7 to 57, and it is possible to learn to sing at any age. However, there are many special considerations for children under age 10, and we strongly encourage the study of piano as part of the voice lesson. (See Piano for Singers)

Except in the situation of vocal coaching, we expect all our voice students to learn how to read music (music theory) and to study diction (language). Students who wish to have voice lessons without embracing these two disciplines as part of their course of study do not need to spend money on a teacher, and should continue simply singing along with CDs at home. A student must have solid understanding of music theory and linguistic concepts in order to benefit from instruction as these areas provide the vocabulary and skills required for improvement. Lacking these skills, the singer simply learns by "imitation" and if the student is not imitating correctly, the teacher has no means for explaining "why" and providing instruction for self-correction.
