YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM

ADMISSION

The student must complete and submit a detailed application with application fee ($25), and attend an audition. The audition includes a written exam, demonstration of basic technique, performance of repertoire pieces and testing for ear training. Within the age guidelines above, students may enter at any level, providing they are in the correct age range for the level and have met the requirements for the previous level. All beginners and students Levels 1 to 4 would enroll in the Core Curriculum.

Deadline: The academic year always begins in September, and the deadline for application is July 15. The student will be contacted for audition upon receipt of the completed application and fee. Auditions are held between July 15 and August 5 based on scheduling availability. Students accepted into the program will be placed at the most appropriate level as demonstrated by the audition. Students not accepted into the program are encouraged to enroll in the Music Appreciation Program, and may reapply to the Young Artist Program in the following year.

Age/Level Requirements: The minimum age to apply is 10 or 5th Grade and maximum age is 15 or 10th Grade. Students in the Young Artist Program must be at an appropriate age for their level, which means they cannot be too old. The chart below indicates the maximum age for students based on level. These age requirements are to ensure that the student will have ample time to complete the program and prepare for audition to college before graduating from high school. The age/grade is what the student will be in the Fall of the entering year:

Application fee: $25 (Check made payable to “Kikuchi Music Institute”).

Audition Requirements: Consult the individual department for specific audition requirements. In most cases students must perform from memory certain repertoire pieces, and must be ready to demonstrate technical skills (scales and arpeggios) at the request of the examiner. The repertoire and technique level of difficulty is specified by the department.

Missed Audition: The application fee of $25 covers the cost of the audition. Any student who fails to show for an audition regardless of the reason may reschedule by paying an additional $25 fee, providing schedule permits it before the August 5 deadline. Any scheduled audition may also be rescheduled with 48 hours advance notice, without penalty or additional fee, under the same proviso. Students who miss an audition must accept the consequence of how such an action may appear to the examiners and that it might negatively impact on consideration of the student’s admission. To ameliorate this impression, any justifiable emergency should be explained in writing with documentation such as letter from doctor or obituary notice.

Notification: Letters announcing the results of the audition will be mailed to all auditioning students on August 6 and students will have until August 20 to accept, enroll and pay for the Fall term. Students not accepted into the Young Artist Program will be invited to enroll in the Music Appreciation Program.
