YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM
The KMI Young Artist Program Program is an 8-year rigorous program that prepares the young aspiring musician for a successful undergraduate educational experience at a leading music school. Currently KMI offers Young Artist Program for piano, voice and composition. Students not intending to audition to a music school are also welcome into the program. Technically the Young Artist Program covers Levels 5 – 12 of the standard curricula. Students are expected to complete each level within one calendar year (3 terms) and there are strict academic penalties for students who fail classes or do not complete requirements.
Students not intending to pursue music study at the college level are admitted to the Young Artist Program only if they qualify. Otherwise, such students should enroll in the Music Appreciation Program. If the student wishes to re-audition to the Young Artist Program in the following year, the teacher can help prepare the student for that audition.
Musicology classes offered are the same for both the Young Artist and Music Appreciation Programs and are scheduled on rotation to minimize time burdens on the faculty, and to ensure a decent class size. (See Musicology Department). Since separate classes cover the areas of Theory and Musicology, the lesson time is devoted solely to technique and music literature (repertoire).
