MUSIC APPRECIATION PROGRAM
The KMI Music Appreciation Program provides the music student with a broad exposure to music beyond the beginning levels. Technically the Music Appreciation Program covers Levels 5 – 12 on the standard curricula, but being that the student is not planning to audition for music school, progress through the levels can be at any pace and study at each level may not be as thorough as would be expected from an aspiring young musician.
Students not intending to pursue music study at the college level and those who did not qualify for admission into the Young Artist Program should enroll in the Music Appreciation Program. If the student wishes to re-audition to the Young Artist Program in the following year, the teacher can help prepare the student for that audition.
The student typically requires 12 months to complete each level, which includes one classroom course per term. Musicology classes offered are the same for both the Young Artist and Music Appreciation Programs and are scheduled on rotation to minimize time burdens on the faculty, and to ensure a decent class size. (See Musicology Department).
Since separate classes cover the areas of Theory and Musicology, the lesson time is devoted solely to technique and music literature (repertoire).
(See BEYOND BEGINNER for more understanding of music study at the intermediate and advanced levels.)
